What are the dimensions of that tank? Can I use my current Harmony Series 48,000 regular mesh control head?

Unfortunately, no, the control head will not be compatible.

What is the difference between "fine mesh" and "cation" on your water softeners?

The only difference between the two systems is the level of iron filtering/reduction. For example, the standard model(s) like the AS-HS32D have up to 2ppm (parts per million) of iron reduction. Systems like the AS-HS32FM have up to 10ppm of iron reduction. This is the same for the other grains of systems along with their fine mesh counterparts. The fine mesh resin is often used if you are clearly seeing signs of iron in the water. Iron often appears as red, yellow, or orange discoloration/staining.
